Home compostable breaks down in a backyard pile. Home compostable is the stronger, more honest claim for consumers, and it is harder to achieve, especially for high-barrier film.
- The food barrier problem. Compostable film still struggles to deliver the barrier that many foods need, particularly anything sensitive to oxygen or moisture with a long shelf life. For dry, short-shelf-life products it can work well. For a coffee or a snack that needs a year of shelf stability, compostable film often is not there yet. Be honest with yourself about your product's needs.
Glass, aluminum, and paperboard. The classics. Glass is infinitely recyclable and premium on shelf, but heavy (freight cost, breakage) and energy-intensive to produce. Aluminum (cans) is highly recyclable with strong recycled content and great barrier, but has cost and format constraints. - Will it run on my co-packer's line? A material your co-packer cannot run efficiently is not a real option.
Start with the lowest-risk swap that still counts. Labels and secondary packaging (the outer box) are cheap, easy places to switch to recycled or FSC-certified stock without touching your food-contact barrier. Prove out sustainability there before you gamble your shelf life on a compostable primary pouch.

Shelf appeal. Sustainable packaging can be a genuine selling point when shoppers can see and understand it. It can also look cheaper or less premium if you are not careful with design. Kraft paper reads sustainable and can read premium. A muddy PCR bottle can read cheap. Design intentionally.
The founders who succeed treat sustainability as a spec, not a slogan. They set a shelf-life target, a cost ceiling, and a footprint goal, then find the material that hits all three. The ones who struggle pick the greenest material first and try to make their product survive in it.
