Retail Data & Analytics

Retail data is the language buyers negotiate in. A category manager pulling up your item is not looking at your deck — they are looking at syndicated scan data, and they are comparing your velocity to the item you would displace. Brands that can speak to that data credibly get taken seriously. Brands that cannot are asking the buyer to take a risk on faith.

The practical problem is cost and coverage. Full syndicated subscriptions are priced for companies much larger than most emerging brands, and the providers cover different channels — conventional grocery and mass look different from natural and specialty. Buying the wrong dataset is an expensive way to learn which panel your buyer actually references.

These posts cover what NielsenIQ and SPINS each measure and when the spend is justified, cheaper ways to get directionally useful data, what retailer portals give you for free, how to read velocity benchmarks without fooling yourself, and how to turn a number into the specific argument that wins shelf space at the next review.
